Daizee Haze
Our resident philosopher looks at one of the most successful female indy wrestlers.
For every Diva or Knockout, there are a dozen successful independent female wrestlers. One of the best indy stars is Daizee Haze. She's made a few appearances in TNA but has chosen, so far, to stay away from the WWE. She's this week's Wrestler of the Week.
The Early Indies
Haze began her career in Gateway Championship Wrestling. She learned about the business from Delirious and Kid Kash. Haze was so impressed by her tutors that she chose to incorporate many of their moves and mannerisms into her own style. Daizee's gimmick was that of a hippie chick, complete with tie-dyed and the appearance of being a "stoner". On the suggestion of several friends, the young wrestler actually legally changed her name to "Daisy Hayes". Over time, she struck up a working relationship with Matt Sydal, who is now known as Evan Bourne. She began to serve as his valet in several independent promotions.
When Matt and Daizee arrived in IWA Mid-South, Daizee strictly served as Matt's manager. That wouldn't last long. In early 2004, she began a program with Allison Danger. That led to her being included in the tournament to crown the first NWA Midwest Women's Champion. She made it all the way to the finals, where she lost to Lacey in a Three-Way Dance. She would bounce back to win the unified NWA Midwest Women's and IWA Mid-South Women's titles. She would hold the titles for three months before dropping the title to MsChif. It would be three years before she would hold the title again.
Ring of Honor and Shimmer
In 2004, Daizee and Matt also began working for Ring of Honor. ROH really didn't utilize a women's division before Haze (and Allison Danger) arrived. Haze rose to the next level in the company when she joined Generation Next, along with Matt Sydal. Haze would eventually break ties with Gen-Next, as well as Sydal, by joining the rival faction, The Embassy. She would stay with the heel faction until it disbanded in September, 2006. After that, she took a face turn and began another feud with Lacey.
After a brutal feud with Lacey, Daizee then moved on to a series of battles against Sara Del Rey. They would occasionally battle over Sara's Shimmer title, but usually did not. When Del Ray expanded her group of associates to battle Daizee, she called on an old friend and mentor, Delirious. Delirious would begin to show feelings towards his former student, only to have her reject him. Delirious would join a rival faction, mostly out of pain of the rejection. He would turn back to aid Daizee, after Jimmy Jacobs threatened to use a spike piledriver on her.
Daizee was a key player in ROH's launch on HDNet. She has battled Del Rey, MsChif and several other female stars. She's also been in search of the Shimmer title. Shimmer, the all-girl promotion, was the sister promotion of Ring of Honor. Her first big Shimmer feuds were against Rebecca Knox and Nikita (Katie Lea Burchill). After a couple of years, Daizee shifted from active competitor to trainer. She still wrestles for ROH and Shimmer but spends most of her time now training new women wrestlers. She has also took on the role of referee, starting in November of 2009.
TNA and Beyond
Starting in 2003, Daizee worked sporadically for TNA. During 2003 and 2004, Daizee worked several PPVs and Xplosion shows, often teaming with Alexis Laree (Mickie James). One of the oddest matches was against Nurse Veronica where the loser ended up in a diaper. Daizee lost. Daizee would leave TNA shortly after. She would return as Daisy Haze in 2008 for a one-shot battle against Cheerleader Melissa (Alissa Flash/Raisha Saeed).
After leaving TNA, Daizee went to the all-girl league known as Wrestlicious. She used the alternate ring name, Marley Sebastian. She has also worked a few Dragon Gate shows in recent months.
In Conclusion:
Daizee Haze is one of the best female wrestlers in the industry, today. Her wrestling career seems to be winding down, so she will soon be full-time passing on her wisdom to the next generation of female grapplers. She is already being compared to Fabulous Moolah, as it relates to being a top-notch trainer. Be sure to check out all the great videos of her in action at ClickWrestle.com.
