CM Punk

ClickWrestler of the Week

Hello wrestling fans, each week I take a look at someone who is making headlines in the wrestling world, sometimes to look back at the humble beginnings of today's mega stars, other times it's to look at the breakout stars of tomorrow. This week we take a look at the one time Indy sensation who grew to become one of the top main event wrestlers on WWE's flagship show, Monday Night Raw. This week's ClickWrestler of the Week is CM Punk.

CM Punk started his career training under Ace Steel out of Minnesota. It was there that he met Colt Cabana, and the two became close friends and remain close to this day. Punks home promotion in his early days would be IWA Mid South. There he would have a long lasting feud with Chris Hero. Punk's became a cult favorite when he joined ROH and feuded with Raven, this feud would mirror his feud he would have years later with Jeff Hardy. During this time he also had a stint in TNA, this time joining Raven as a part of The Gathering. Punk would go on to win the ROH World Heavyweight title from Austin Aries. This came as a surprise to many fans as he won the title after it was announced that he would be leaving ROH, since he had just signed a contract with the WWE.

Punk has enough accolades in the WWE to fill several trophy cases. Being a three time World Heavyweight champion, ECW champion, Intercontinental champion, World Tag Team Champion, and a two time Money in the Bank winner, Punk has been able to continue the success he had on the Indy's right into the major league. Punk most recently has stepped into what was already the hottest storyline of 2010, and he quickly made it unique and have his fingerprints all over it when he stepped in as leader of the Nexus.

CM Punk has a unique ability to adapt to the culture of the promotion that he is in. In IWA:MS he was able to adapt a more violent style, which got his foot in the door for no DQ matches in ROH, but his work changed to a much more technical/striking style over time. You have seen him work in WWE for years, but seeing CM Punk in any other promotion in the different eras of his career, it's like watching a different wrestler in the ring.

This week's staff pick of the week is from his first home, IWA:MS. A dream match that would never be relived, CM Punk vs. Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Eddie Guerrero. This took place in early 2002, the timing was so critical for this match to took place. Eddie Guerrero was briefly released from the WWE, Rey Mysterio was not hired by the WWE after the WCW buyout, and Punk was not only the IWA:MS Heavyweight champion as well as a star ready to break out.
